SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the third time this season, multiple Cal Poly track and field athletes have received Big West weekly awards as Travis Martin was crowned Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Carson Smith was named Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
For Martin, this is the third time in five weeks he has earned Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. He is the first Big West athlete to win the award three times in a season since Sebastian Coleman and Charlie Vernoy of Long Beach State both won it three times in 2022.
For Smith, this is his second career Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and first since April 30, 2024. He is the fourth Mustang to claim the honor this season, joining Liam Miller (March 17), Vincent Atilano (March 25) and Aidan McCarthy (March 31).
This is the second time this season Cal Poly has swept the Big West Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors.
The praise for Martin comes after the San Jose, Calif. native shattered the school record in the men's hammer throw at the Beach Invitational on Friday. The 2025 Second Team All-American recorded a massive lifetime best of 248 feet, 1 inch (75.62 meters). The mark currently ranks first in the Big West, No. 3 in the West Region, No. 4 in the NCAA and No. 20 in the World this outdoor season. He surpassed his previous personal best in the event four separate times during Friday's meet.
Martin is now a four-time Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honoree.
Smith’s honor comes after a strong showing at the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational this past Friday and Saturday where he doubled in the men’s 800 and 1,500 meters. First on Friday, the Temecula, Calif native posted a time of 1:48.10 in the invite section of the men’s 800, matching his second fastest time ever ran in the event. He currently ranks No. 2 in the Big West in the event, No. 21 in the West Region and tied for 50th in the NCAA.
On Saturday at Azusa Pacific, Smith closed out the weekend by running a season’s best and his second fastest time ever in the men’s 1,500, placing 17th in the elite section with a time of 3:39.57. His time currently leads the Big West and is No. 22 in the West Region, and 41st in the NCAA.
Outdoors, Smith currently ranks No. 3 in school history in the men’s 800 and No. 4 in the 1,500.
Cal Poly travels to UC Santa Barbara for the second and final time this outdoor season to compete in the UCSB Invite this Friday and Saturday.
