Mustangs Lead Long Beach State Wire-to-Wire in 78-69 Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate guard Jarred Hyder (above) finished with a team leading 19 points – sinking five three-pointers Saturday afternoon – as the Cal Poly men's basketball program led Long Beach State wire-to-wire, earning its first Big West victory of the season with a 78-69 decision inside Mott Athletics Center.
Graduate guards Mac Riniker and Owen Koonce added 16 and 15 points, respectively, for Cal Poly (7-14, 1-8), which shot 50.8 (30-for-59) percent from the floor and forced Long Beach State into 23 turnovers.
Entering Saturday's matchup ranked third among 355 Division I programs with 32.2 three-pointers attempted per game, Cal Poly shot just 15 Saturday – but outscored Long Beach State in the paint, 46-30.
Playing four of its next five matchups on the road, Cal Poly continues action at Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday, Jan. 30 (6:30 p.m.) and UC Riverside on Saturday, Feb. 1 (5 p.m.). Both matchups stream on ESPN+.
Cal Poly forced Long Beach State into five turnovers and just one shot attempt inside the opening three minutes Saturday, transforming the inefficiency into an early 8-0 lead. Ultimately holding Long Beach State without a field goal for the opening six minutes, Cal Poly established a 21-8 lead 12 minutes before the break.
Shooting 50.0 (16-for-32) percent during the first half and holding Long Beach State to just one three-pointer in nine attempts, Cal Poly led by as much as 18 during the opening period with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Hyder handing the Mustangs a 40-28 lead heading into the locker room.
Riniker opened the second half by sinking Cal Poly's first two attempts from the floor, but Long Beach State responded with a 16-5 run to cut its gap to 49-44 with 15 minutes to play.
The Mustangs still held a 60-54 advantage with eight minutes left before a tip-in and jumper from Koonce reaffirmed the double-digit lead. Hyder's fourth three-pointer of the afternoon two-and-a-half minutes later stretched the lead to 70-56 as the Mustangs kept Long Beach State at a distance down the stretch.
