Cal Poly Comes Up Short in Big West Opener
9/19/2024 10:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Despite outshooting and out-possessing the Gauchos, the Cal Poly women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara on Thursday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium in its Big West opener.
Junior forward Emily Lieber had arguably the best scoring opportunity of the night for the Mustangs (1-6-2) just nine minutes into the match. Senior midfielder McKenna Carbon played a ball on the right side over the top of the UCSB (3-3-4) backline and Lieber scorched down the sideline to catch up to it as the Gaucho goalkeeper came off her line. The El Dorado Hills, Calif. native one-timed a shot toward goal from outside the box and UCSB goalkeeper Maddie Buckley got a piece of it with her right hand, but enough to keep it from bouncing right toward a wide-open net. However, a Gaucho defender got to the ball just before it crossed the goal-line and sent it out of play.
Senior forward Kate Reedy and junior defender Camryn Penn registered shots on goal in the second half as well, but the Mustangs and Gauchos went to halftime tied 0-0.
The Gauchos broke through for the match's lone goal in the 79th minute.
Cal Poly didn't go down without a fight though. Just two minutes after UCSB's goal, the Mustangs earned a corner on the left side and junior Brennan Cole received the ball on a short corner and nearly curled one into the back of the net as the UCSB keeper reached up to deflect it off the crossbar and out of danger.
In a last-ditch effort to level the match, senior defender Dani Wozniak blasted a shot from roughly 25 yards out in the 87th minute and nearly curled into the top left corner of the net as it soared just wide of the post.
Cal Poly finished with a 10-7 shot advantage in the match, and sent six on frame compared to UCSB's three.
Defenders Emma Brown, Aynsley Conner and Camryn Penn, and midfielder Sophia Minnite played all 90 minutes in the match for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly remains at home to host Nevada at noon Sunday. Prior to the match, the Mustangs will honor their 12 seniors. You can purchase tickets to the match HERE.
