SAN LUIS OBISPO – Five days ahead of its regular season opening match, the Cal Poly men’s soccer program visits No. 5 Stanford for its final exhibition warmup, set for Saturday, Aug. 17.
Kickoff from Maloney Field at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium is 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, which featured four different goalscorers – and a 17-minute, second-half brace from freshman forward Finn Linas – in its 5-1 Sunday home exhibition victory against Pacific.
After falling behind in the 14th minute Sunday to Pacific, Cal Poly received goals from junior forward Luke Schaefer (26’), sophomore defender Joaquin Torres (40’), Linas (72’, 89’) and junior midfielder Quinn Mahoney (79’). All four of Cal Poly’s goalkeepers saw time against Pacific with junior Nicky McCune recording the lone save Sunday, turning away a 14th-minute penalty.
The Mustangs open the 2024 regular season with a four-game road trip, starting on Thursday, Aug. 22 at San Francisco and continuing Sunday, Aug. 25 at Saint Mary’s.
Stanford, where second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy served as the associate head coach and top assistant (2016-22), finished 11-4-5 last season. A No. 16 seed for the NCAA Tournament, Stanford reached the quarterfinals before going out to eventual national champion Clemson.
