SAN LUIS OBISPO – Five years after playing his first game for Mike DeGeorge at Division II Colorado Mesa, 6-7 forward Ethan Menzies officially rejoined Cal Poly’s first-year head coach Wednesday afternoon as a graduate transfer into the Mustang men’s basketball program.
A native of Half Moon Bay, Calif., Menzies made his collegiate debut at Colorado Mesa during the 2019-20 campaign before earning NABC Division II All-America praise as a sophomore for the 2020-21 season. Injured and unable to compete during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, Menzies returned to the Colorado Mesa lineup in January 2024.
Pursuing a master’s degree in nutrition, Menzies has two years of eligibility remaining, starting with the 2024-25 season.
Seven years ago when we started to recruit Ethan to Colorado Mesa, we loved his length and versatility. What we didn’t know until we got to coach him was his incredible mental ability to see the game and how impactful his length and hands are on the outcome of plays. Ethan has had a difficult last few years due to injuries and he’s just getting back to full strength. We’re confident that he will get back to where he was when he earned All-America honors. He’s highly motivated and what he’s been through has only made him stronger.- Mike DeGeorge, Cal Poly Head Coach
As a freshman for Colorado Mesa during the 2019-20 season, Menzies appeared in all 31 games with nine starts, shot 67.7 (84-for-124) percent from the floor and averaged 5.9 points per night in helping the Mavericks to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament title and a berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Menzies returned as a sophomore to average 15.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 57.7 (150-for-260) percent to earn NABC All-America and NABC All-West Region first team selection and All-RMAC first team praise. Starting all 23 games, Menzies was also named RMAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after helping lift Colorado Mesa to a second successive postseason conference title.
Sidelined by injury for the next two years though, Menzies – following a 33-month layoff – returned for the 2023-24 season to appear in 19 of 34 matchups and assist Colorado Mesa to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Menzies is a graduate of Half Moon Bay HS.
