SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After having stellar seasons on the sand this year, Cal Poly saw three of its starting pairs earn AVCA Top Flight Honors.
The Mustangs' No. 1 pair of sophomores Ella Connor and Izzy Martinez as well as the No. 2 duo of junior Piper Ferch and freshman Erin Inskeep and the No. 3 pair of graduate Lindsey Sparks and freshman Quinn Perry all earned the award.
The Top Flight award recognizes excellence in collegiate beach volleyball from all over the country across all flights. For a pair to be eligible for the award, the pair must compete in at least 15 matches together at a specific flight number and win at least 75% of their matches.
Connor and Martinez have been one of the top pairs in the country all season. They head into this week with a record of 25-8 together and have wins over seven ranked teams. They are ranked by collegebeachvb.com as the ninth best overall pair in the country.
Ferch and Inskeep have also been a dynamic duo all year with a 28-5 record, the most wins on the team. They have eight wins over ranked teams and are 9-1 in their last 10 matches. They are just two wins shy of setting the program record for wins by a pair in a season.
Sparks and Perry have been strong at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, going 16-4 with seven wins over ranked teams.
The No. 5 seed Mustangs start the NCAA Championship Friday against No. 12 seed Arizona State Friday at 8 a.m. PT/10 a.m. CT on ESPNU.
