Mustangs Come up Just Short Against UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – Cal Poly men's tennis' doubles duo of Colter Smith and Bastiaan Westsrate continued their strong season, but the Mustangs (7-7, 2-1 BW) came up just short on the road Saturday at UC Irvine, falling 4-3.
Cal Poly was able to take the doubles point to start off the match thanks to wins by Smith and Weststrate at the No. 1 spot followed by Noah Berry and Fernando Fonseca at the No. 3 spot.
Smith and Weststrate are now 10-2 on the season, including 3-0 in Big West play.
In singles, the Anteaters (12-5, 2-0 BW) won at the No. 5, 4, and 3 spots to take a 3-1 lead. Cal Poly freshman Sean Kamyshev then won his match at the No. 6 spot followed by Leather winning his match at the No. 2 spot to tie the dual 3-3.
At the No. 1 spot, Berry fought valiantly, sending his match to a third set but lost in the third, 7-5.
Cal Poly will now embark on five straight home matches over the final two weeks of the regular season, including four next week. Next up, the Mustangs will host powerhouse USC on Wednesday, April 10 at 2 p.m.
