FINAL BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS: TEAM | INDIVIDUAL
LA QUINTA – Mustang senior Joey Zambri (above, left) and junior Baron Szeto (above, right) tied for fourth on the final leaderboard as the Cal Poly men's golf program finished third at the Big West Championship for a second successive season at La Quinta Country Club Tuesday afternoon.
Cal Poly's three-day total of two-under 862 was 12 shots back of champion Long Beach State and eight behind runner-up Cal State Fullerton. The Mustangs, in third place entering Tuesday's final round, combined for a one-over 287 during the final 18 holes to go one shot better than Monday's second round and equalize Sunday's opening round.
"I think the full strength of college golf and of the Big West programs was on display at La Quinta. Our team was in a good position had the leading overnight teams – Long Beach State and Cal state Fullerton – made any errors," fourth-year Cal Poly head coach Phil Rowe said. "Hats off to Long Beach and Fullerton for winning the team and individual titles, respectively. Baron and Joey finishing in the top five shows more progress for our program.
"Next season, we'll want to be in contention earlier and more often to be ready to hoist the team title. Thank you to our seniors, alumni and supporters for the opportunities of our players to earn first-class degrees while playing top-tier competitive golf."
Individually, Zambri produced four birdies and eagled the par five 11th hole to finish with a second successive 70 on Tuesday and a three-day, five-under 211 (71-70-70).
Szeto, who shared last year's Big West individual title, also chalked up four birdies Tuesday as part of an even-par 72. Szeto's three-round 211 also included an opening-round 70 and second-day 69.
Zambri and Szeto were both nine shots behind winner Tegan Andrews (Cal State Fullerton), who opened the Big West Championship with a nine-under 63 and closed it with a six-under 66.
Mustang junior Jackson Parrish finished 20th with a three-round, five-over 221 (72-75-74). Graduate student Ben Quick enjoyed three birdies Tuesday, but was 34th with a 12-over 228 (74-74-80). Entering Cal Poly's final-day lineup, freshman Louis Pilod shot a one-under 71 with a pair of birdies.
