BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD
LA QUINTA – Three Mustangs sit among the top 10 players on the Big West Championship leaderboard following Sunday afternoon's initial 18 holes as the Cal Poly men's golf program resides in third place after the opening round at the La Quinta Country Club.
Finishing the opening round with a collective one-under, 287, Cal Poly sits just one shot behind defending champion Long Beach State. Cal State Fullerton – fueled by a nine-under 63 from first-round leader Tegan Andrews – tops the nine-program field after recording a seven-under 281.
After sharing last year's Big West individual title, Cal Poly junior Baron Szeto (above) opened defense of his 2023 championship with a two-under 70 that included an eagle on the par-five 11th hole and three birdies. After 18 holes, Szeto is fifth among the field's 44 competitors.
Senior Joey Zambri is a shot behind in sixth place with his one-under 71 comprising four birdies. Junior Jackson Parrish, meanwhile, is in ninth after recording three birdies for an even-par 72.
Graduate student Ben Quick also picked up three bridies Sunday, but settled for a two-over 74 and resides in 14th position. Junior Parker Mapes chalked up two birdies, but four bogeys on the back nine left him with a three-over 75 and a share of 20th place.
Round No. 2 of the Big West Championship gets underway Monday, April 29 at 10 a.m.
