SAN LUIS OBISPO – Returning to the La Quinta Country Club following last season's third-place finish at the Big West Championship, the Cal Poly men's golf program begins play at the 2024 edition Sunday morning seeking the program's first conference title since 2006.
Live scoring for all three tournament rounds will be available HERE.
"In the buildup to this point over the past four years, three program aims emerged as a result of talking to recruits – the future Cal Poly student-athletes," fourth-year Mustangs head coach Phil Rowe said. "First, compete with the best in terms of our tournament scheduling and the individual summer tournaments players compete in. Second, raise our exposure within top-tier golf spheres. Third, develop a winning mentality.
"We've delivered on the first two. However, through our journey, we've achieved on that ultimate aim because we now understand and have observed what we need to do. This leaves the door open for our Mustangs to hone in on the great opportunity that lies ahead at the Big West Championship: defend the individual title and win our first team title since 2006."
The 54-hole championship gets under on the 7,056-yard, par-72 La Quinta Country Club with an initial 18 holes on Sunday, April 28. Action continues on Monday, April 29 with a further 18 holes before the final round on Tuesday, April 30.
Individually for the Mustangs, Baron Szeto returns to defend his 2023 title as the junior closed last year's championship in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with a five-under, 211 to become just the third player in program history with an individual conference title.
Cal Poly's lineup for the Big West Championship also includes junior Jackson Parrish, who finished two shots behind Szeto at last year's championship, and graduate student Ben Quick, who was eighth in 2023 with a one-under, 215. Rounding off Cal Poly's 2024 entries are senior Joey Zambri and junior Parker Mapes (freshman Louis Pilod also travels as an alternate competitor).
"It's our good fortune to be able to compete over the pristine, PGA Tour course at La Quinta," Rowe said. "It's a pretty special opportunity to build on our program's legacy there."
During Cal Poly's 10-tournament 2023-24 regular season, Quick led Cal Poly's Big West Championship lineup with a 72.9 stroke average over 30 rounds (10 of which were under par). In a competitive group, Szeto averaged 73.2 strokes per 27 rounds while Zambri and Parrish each averaged 73.3 (27 rounds apiece). Mapes averaged 73.9 strokes per 21 rounds.
The Big West champion receives earns an automatic berth to the 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The individual medalist also earns a place in the regional field if he's not part of the winning program.
