
Mustangs Blank UC Riverside to Advance to Big West Championship Semifinals

SAN DIEGO — Cal Poly men's tennis handled its business Friday morning in its first match of the Big West Championship in San Diego, shutting out No. 6 seed UC Riverside 4-0 in the quarterfinals to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
The No. 3 seed Mustangs (10-9) dominated doubles to start off the dual. The No. 1 team of Colter Smith and Bastiaan Weststrate shutout the Highlanders' top duo 6-0 before the No. 3 pair of Noah Berry and Joe Leather won their match 6-1 to secure the double point for Cal Poly.
In singles, Fernando Fonseca made quick work of his opponent at the No. 3 spot, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Sean Kamyshev then gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead after winning his match at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-0 to improve his singles record this year to 11-6.
The victory was clinched at the No. 4 spot by senior Colter Smith after he came out on top 6-4, 6-1.
Cal Poly plays UC Irvine in the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m.
