Cal Poly Sees Big West Title Hopes End in Semifinals

SAN DIEGO — Cal Poly men's tennis won the doubles point but was unable to take down UC Irvine in the Big West Championship semifinals Saturday, falling to the No. 2 seed Anteaters 4-1 to end their season.
The Mustangs (10-10) took the doubles point to start off the dual after the No. 1 pair of Colter Smith and Bastiaan Weststrate won their match 6-0. That was later followed by the No. 3 pair of Noah Berry and Joe Leather winning their match 6-4 to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
However in singles, UC Irvine won at the 6, 4, 1, and 2 spots to win the dual 4-1 and advance to Sunday's Big West Championship Finals.
It was still another strong year for the Mustangs as they finished the season in the top three of the Big West standings for the fourth time in the last five years.
Cal Poly will lose five guys from this year's team to graduation. Those include key contributors the last several years such as Noah Berry, Joe Leather, Fernando Fonseca, and Colter Smith.
