Cal Poly Wins Thriller Against LBSU to Advance to Big West Semifinals
4/25/2024 8:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team, the No. 5 seed, secured a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over fourth-seeded Long Beach State in the Big West quarterfinals Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego to secure a spot in the semifinals at the tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
The Mustangs (11-8-1) will now face top seed UC Santa Barbara (14-7-1) in the semifinals of the Big West Championship at noon Friday in San Diego. The two teams played to a 3-3 tie to end the regular season this past Sunday in San Luis Obispo after a protest following the dual led to the Gauchos losing a match point.
Just like their matchup during the regular season, Cal Poly dropped the doubles point to Long Beach State following defeats at No. 1 and No. 2. However, junior Eliza Bates and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock were able to secure a 6-4 win at No. 3 to improve to 8-2 on the year.
Trailing 1-0, the Mustangs needed players to step up in singles to keep their season alive — and they did.
After the Beach took a 2-0 lead with a win at the No. 1 spot, junior Peyton Dunkle and sophomore Alexandra Ozerets responded with straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to level the match at 2-2. Ozerets finished first, rolling to a 6-2, 6-4 win to move to 13-7 this season. Dunkle improved to 10-6 this spring with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 triumph.
The three remaining singles matches all went to a third set. Despite a strong start, junior Romane Mosse suffered a hard-fought 6-3, 1-6, 2-6 defeat at No. 4, allowing Long Beach to take a 3-2 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, graduate student Melissa LaMette and Buntrock both came through in the clutch to deliver the Mustangs a victory. After losing the first set in her match at No. 6 6-1, Buntrock battled back and won the second 6-3 and the third 6-1 to even the match back up at 3-3. It was Buntrock's sixth consecutive singles victory, and she improved to 12-6 on the year and 4-0 at the No. 6 spot this season.
Just moments after Buntrock's win, LaMette completed a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to propel Cal Poly past LBSU and into the Big West semifinals.
With the win, the Mustangs avenged a narrow 4-3 home defeat to LBSU during the regular season.
