SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Mustangs did it — they are headed back to the Big West Championship match.
The Cal Poly women's tennis team took down top-seeded UC Santa Barbara 4-2 in the Big West semifinals Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center to secure a spot in the conference championship match for the fourth consecutive year.
The fifth-seeded Mustangs (12-8-1) will face No. 6 seed Cal State Fullerton (17-8) in the Big West Championship match at 1 p.m. Saturday. Cal Poly dominated the 55th-ranked Gauchos (14-8-1) in singles play to secure its sixth trip to the Big West Championship match in program history. It was also just the Mustangs' third victory all-time over UCSB in the Big West tournament, and the first since defeating them in the quarterfinals in 2007.
The Gauchos won the doubles point, but the Mustangs were unfazed as they came out on a mission in singles play. Junior Romane Mosse set the tone, coasting to a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 to level the match at 1-1. Mosse improved to 16-5 on the year with the win, the ninth most dual singles victories in a season in Division I program history.
Junior Peyton Dunkle gave Cal Poly a 2-1 lead with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2, securing her third straight victory to move to 11-6 on the year.
UCSB won at No. 1, but it didn't matter because the Mustangs took the first set in five of the six singles matches and were determined to knock off their bitter rival. Sophomore Alexandra Ozerets helped Cal Poly regain the lead, capturing a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3. Ozerets improved to 14-7 on the season and 4-2 at the No. 3 spot with the win.
With two singles matches remaining, Cal Poly only needed to win one to book its ticket to the title match and for the second straight day at the Big West tournament graduate student Melissa LaMette delivered the match-clinching point.
At No. 5, LaMette staved off her opponent in a tiebreaker in the second set to earn a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win and propel Cal Poly past the Gauchos.
LaMette and Mosse also grabbed a dominant 6-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles spot during the match.
Cal Poly will be seeking its second Big West Championship title when they square off against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. The meeting will mark the first all-time between the two schools in the conference championship match. The Mustangs are 2-0 all-time against the Titans in Big West postseason play, defeating them in the conference semis in 2021 and 2018.
