SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team fought until the bitter end and gave No. 53 UC Santa Barbara everything they could handle Sunday at the Mustang Tennis Complex, but the Mustangs came up just short 4-3 to wrap up regular season play.
With the defeat, Cal Poly (10-9, 5-4 Big West) finished in a tie for fifth place in the final Big West regular season standings with Cal State Fullerton. However, the Titans (15-8, 5-4 Big West) own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mustangs meaning Cal Poly will be the sixth seed in the Big West Championships. Cal Poly will battle No. 3 seed Hawai'i in the Big West quarterfinals at noon Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
The Gauchos, the Big West regular season champions who finished with a 9-0 record in conference play, earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, but Cal Poly's top doubles pairing had a strong showing. When the doubles point was clinched, fifth year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle were leading the 37th-ranked doubles team in the nation 4-3. The dynamic duo is 13-3 this season.
In singles, the Mustangs took it to their Blue-Green rival and battled for every point. After falling down 2-0, Peyton and junior Romane Mosse both secured straight-set victories to help Cal Poly level the match at 2-2. Peyton won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 to improve to 9-6 on the year, while Mosse rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 to grab her 12th straight singles win. Mosse is 15-4 this season and finished at 8-1 in Big West regular season play.
UCSB (14-7) pulled back in front with a win at No. 3, but Cal Poly evened the score once again thanks to a gritty 6-2, 7-5 victory from sophomore Kennedy Buntrock at No. 6. It was Buntrock's fifth consecutive win and she improved to 11-6 on the year.
With the dual at 3-3, it all came down to No. 5 and graduate student Melissa LaMette left everything she had on the court in her final home match but came up short in the third set of her match.
Following the match, Cal Poly honored its two seniors — Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette.
Now Cal Poly will shift all of its attention to the Big West Championships and the Rainbow Wahine (9-11, 6-3 Big West). The Mustangs beat Hawai'i, the defending Big West champions, 5-2 in San Luis Obispo during the regular season.
