Sanders Reaches 1,000 Career Points in Season Finale at UC San Diego
3/9/2024 7:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LA JOLLA – Finishing with 30 points in his 100th collegiate appearance, senior guard Kobe Sanders became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball team – after trailing UC San Diego by 18 early in the second half before cutting the deficit to three six times – closed the 2023-24 season Saturday afternoon with a 92-87 loss to UC San Diego inside LionTree Arena,
Freshman guard Justin Page enjoyed a career best 21 points for Cal Poly, which found itself trailing, 57-39, with 17 minutes to play. The Mustangs, however, outscored UC San Diego, 27-12, in the next 10 minutes to shorten the deficit to a single possession. Each and every time Cal Poly closed within three points of UC San Diego in the final seven minutes, however, the Tritons scored on the ensuing possession to keep the Mustangs at a distance.
Freshman guard Quentin Jones added 16 points for Cal Poly while junior center Joel Armotrading scored 12, blocked four shots and missed a double-double by just two rebounds.
Completing one of the finest scoring campaigns in program history Saturday, Sanders finished his senior year ranked third in single season history with 568 points and seventh with 19.6 points per game. His 174 made free throws marked the second highest single season total while an 87.4 (174-for-199) percent free throw mark – amongst the top 50 NCAA Division I players – ranks seventh all-time.
Sanders, who scored in double digits in 29 appearances, finished with six 30-point outings.
Trailing UC San Diego 14-8 after four-and-a-half minutes despite knocking down their initial four shot attempts, the Mustangs – aided by a three-pointer and jumper from Sanders – recovered to take a 15-14 advantage.
The two sides traded the lead three more times to close the half but, with the Mustangs behind 35-32 and four minutes to go, UC San Diego closed the period with a 14-3 run. Shooting 60.0 (18-for-30) percent from the floor during the opening half, UC San Diego took a 49-35 lead into the locker room.
The Tritons then sank a three-pointer to open the second half and stretched the advantage as far as 57-39 with 16 minutes remaining.
Cal Poly, however, responded by keeping UC San Diego without a field goal for the next five minutes. With four different Mustangs scoring as part of a 13-2 run, Cal Poly cut the deficit to 59-52 with 12 minutes left.
