RESULTS
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Junior Travis Martin shattered the school record in the men's hammer throw, junior Colby Neron posted a top-10 mark in program history in the men's javelin and the Mustangs captured 15 event victories as the Cal Poly track and field program opened its outdoor season at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational this Wednesday through Friday.
A total of five teams competed in the meet — Cal Poly, the host Gauchos, Cal State Bakersfield, Westmont and Porterville.
Martin and Neron, a pair of junior college transfers, made quite the splash in their Cal Poly debuts.
Martin wasted no time, breaking the school record in the men's hammer on his second throw as a Mustang with a personal best of 214 feet, 6 inches. Martin bested Rory Devaney's 2023 school record in the event by over 12 feet to take first in the event. Last year, Martin won the CCCAA California State Championship in the men's hammer as a sophomore at De Anza College.
Neron soared to No. 3 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the men's javelin with a personal best of 227 feet, 5 inches. The Medford, Oregon native was a two-time Junior College All-American in the javelin while attending Umpqua Community College the past two years. The Mustangs secured the top five places in the men's javelin at the UCSB Invitational, led by Neron. Freshman Ben Lammers earned second (192-5), redshirt senior Kevin Schmitt third (175-10), senior Chase Walter fourth (175-5) and freshman Anthony Edson fifth (153-11).
The Cal Poly men secured seven other event victories at the meet. Junior Corban Payne won the shot put with a mark of 55 feet, 11.25 inches, and junior Noah Bustos grabbed the top spot in the long jump with an impressive PR (24-10).
Freshman Mateo Malko-Allen ran a PR to win the 1,500-meter (3:51.45), and senior Joey Souto placed first in the 400 hurdles (53.40 seconds). In the men's high jump, Schmitt claimed first and freshman Nathan Fifer took second as both cleared 6-4.75.
The Mustangs swept the men's 4x100 (41.47) and 4x400 (3:16.72) relays.
Cal Poly also claimed first in the women's 4x100 relay as freshman Ava Fortier, graduate student Shelby Daniele, senior Anisa Rind and junior Cadence Roy-Williams led the Mustangs to victory with a time of 46.3 seconds. The women's team earned five other victories at the meet.
Daniele picked up an individual victory in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.73. The Clovis, Calif. native is tied for No. 2 all-time in school history in the event.
Freshman Ashlyn Leath led a slew of Mustangs in the 1,500, placing first with a PR (4:38.06). Junior Ellie Baxter snagged third (4:38.64) in the event and freshman Danica Brinkman fourth (4:39.05), both running personal bests. Junior Isabella Rigby won the shot put (155-9) and sophomore Lexi Evans took first in the pole vault (12-5.5).
Cal Poly claimed the top four places in the women's high jump. Junior Lariel Henley emerged with the victory, posting a personal best (5-7). Sophomore Chase Kubinski and freshman Melanie Castelli each cleared 5-5 to finish second and third respectively, while sophomore Maia Garcia was fourth (5-3).
Devaney, a San Luis Obispo native, grabbed second in the discus (174-4) and third in the hammer (193-5).
Freshman Isaac Knapp recorded PRs in six events in the decathlon to place third.
Cal Poly returns to action on March 22-23 to host its only regular season meet at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex — the second annual Mark Conover Classic.
