Cal Poly Hosts Second Annual Conover Classic Friday, Saturday

FINAL MEET SCHEDULE
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program is set to host the second annual Mark Conover Classic this Friday and Saturday at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.
Action during the Mustangs' only regular season home meet this spring starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the men's hammer throw, while events on the track will start at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, field events get underway at 11 a.m. with the men's pole vault, with running events to follow at 1 p.m. Prior to events starting on the track Saturday, Cal Poly will hold a special ceremony to recognize its 19 seniors — Quinton Alexander, Davis Bove, Shelby Daniele, Will Fallini-Haas, Nick Gammal, Anna Grexton, Anthony Guerra, Annie Hatzenbeler, Kaia Hoak, Cassidy Hubert, Erik Luu, Joaquin Martinez de Pinillos, Anisa Rind, Natalie Rogers, Kevin Schmitt, Jadyn Snaer, Joey Souto, Spencer Thurman and Zack Volpe.
Nearly 70 Mustangs are entered in the meet and Big West foes Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara will both be making the trip to San Luis Obispo to compete.
The inaugural Conover Classic was held last year and is named in honor of the late Mark Conover, who passed away in April 2022 after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of skin cancer. Mark served as Cal Poly's Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for more than 13 years and a coach for the Mustangs for 25 seasons overall.
This weekend, Cal Poly will be looking to build off a strong showing at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational two weeks ago to open its outdoor season. The Mustangs claimed 15 event victories and Travis Martin and Colby Neron, a pair of junior college transfers, wasted no time breaking into the program record books in their first meet as Mustangs.
Martin obliterated the school record in the men's hammer throw with a personal best of 214 feet, 6 inches, while Neron soared to No. 3 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the men's javelin with a PR of 227 feet, 5 inches.
Following the Conover Classic, the Mustangs head to the Bay Area on March 29-30 to take part in the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
