Cal Poly Takes Down Tigers, Ospreys in First Home Matches

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its first home matches of the season, the Cal Poly beach volleyball program rolled to victories over Pacific and North Florida at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on Saturday.
With the victories, the ninth-ranked Mustangs extended their win streak to seven and improved to 12-2 overall on the season.
Cal Poly opened the day with a sweep, beating Pacific 5-0. The Tigers forfeited at the No. 5 allowing Abbey Reinard and Sydney Terrell to pick up a victory, then Piper Ferch and Erin Inskeep continued their impressive start to the season, grabbing a commanding 21-9, 21-10 win at the No. 2 pairing.
The Mustangs' top pairing of Ella Connor and Izzy Martinez earned a decisive 21-12, 21-15 win, Quinn Perry and Madison Nichols snagged a 21-10, 21-14 victory at No. 3 and Piper Naess and Logan Walter finished off the sweep with a 21-16, 21-11 win at No. 4.
The Mustangs wrapped up their home-opening night with a gritty 4-1 victory over North Florida, who received votes in the latest AVCA national poll. Connor and Martinez improved to 10-4 on the season as a pairing with a 21-14, 21-15 win at No. 1, and Perry and Lindsey Sparks teamed up for a 21-14, 21-14 at No. 3 to give Cal Poly a 2-0 advantage over the Ospreys (9-7).
North Florida won at No. 4 to make it 2-1, but Ferch and Inskeep quickly responded with a 21-19, 21-13 victory at No. 2 to help the Mustangs clinch the match win and jump in front 3-1. With their two victories Saturday, Ferch and Inskeep improved to an astonishing 12-1 as a pairing. The duo has won their last eight matches.
The final match between the Mustangs and Ospreys at No. 5 went to a decisive third set and Naess and Walter emerged victorious, winning a thriller 23-21, 18-21, 15-13.
Cal Poly completes its home-opening weekend at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on Sunday with matches against Santa Clara at 11:30 a.m. and UC Davis at 3:15 p.m.
