SAN LUIS OBISPO – After completing one of the finest scoring seasons in Cal Poly men's basketball history, senior guard Kobe Sanders earned All-Big West honorable mention selection Tuesday afternoon.
A double-digit scorer in all 29 appearances this year and with six 30-point efforts, Sanders finished the regular season as the Big West's second-leading scorer at 19.6 points per game and fourth with 568 total points. Sinking a Big West best 174 free throws, Sanders – as of March 12 – ranked 45th among NCAA Division I players with an 87.4 percent free throw mark.
Scoring his way into Cal Poly's record book, Sanders finished second in single season program history with his 174 free throws, third with 568 points and seventh with 19.1 points per game.
In his 100th career appearance during Cal Poly's March 9 season finale at UC San Diego, Sanders scored with 30 points to become just the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 as a Mustang.
Scoring a career best 35 points against UC Riverside (Feb. 24) and 33 versus CSUN (Dec. 28), Sanders recorded 13 outings of 20-plus points. He led Cal Poly in scoring 20 times.
Finishing 17-for-17 from the free throw line against CSUN, Sanders eclipsed the previous program record for conversions (16) and enjoyed the top free throw shooting game of any Division I player until Markeese Hastings of Robert Morris also finished 17-for-17 against Detroit Mercy (Jan. 17). The 17 conversions remain the fourth highest total in the nation this season.
A starter in all 29 appearances, Sanders also ranked third among Big West players at 33.6 points per game and 10th with 3.2 assists per outing.
