SEATTLE, Wash. — The Cal Poly track and field program wrapped up its indoor season in fashion this Friday and Saturday at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invitational as Spencer Pickren shattered a school record, Davis Bove posted a sub-four-minute mile and Tatiana Cornejo ran the fastest women's indoor 3,000-meter time by a Mustang in nearly 40 years.
It was a historic showing for the three Cal Poly distance runners that made the trip to Seattle to cap off another successful indoor season for the squad.
The action started Friday evening for the Mustangs as Cornejo recorded the third-fastest time in program history in the women's 3,000 (9:16.93) to finish 10th in a loaded field. It was the fastest time indoors by a Mustang since Gladees Prieur in 1985 (9:16.34), and the best indoors or outdoors since Teena Colebrook broke the outdoor 3,000 school record in 1990 (9:05.80).
Cornejo was just 1.69 seconds off Amy Harper's 1983 school record in the 3,000 (9:15.54). The performance finished off an incredible indoor campaign for the sophomore, who obliterated the program record in the women's indoor 5,000 by nearly 22 seconds (16:01.47) at the Husky Classic on Feb. 9 and ran the fifth-fastest mile time (4:46.10) at the UW Invitational on Jan. 27.
Pickren stepped up on the track about 30 minutes after Cornejo and laid down an impressive performance of his own, breaking the 2023 school record in the men's 3,000 with a time of 8:02.53 to place ninth. Earlier this season at the UW Invitational, the junior ran a sub-four-minute mile (3:59.38).
Pickren's mile time was the second fastest in school history until Bove surpassed him Saturday at Dempsey Indoor, running a time of 3:58.00 to capture second. Bove is the fourth Mustang to post a sub-four-minute mile this season and the fifth in program history. Bove, who earned Second Team All-American honors in the mile twice while competing for LSU, wasn't quite able to best his blistering PR of 3:56.38 in the event. The graduate student established a program record in the men's 1,000 at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 13.
With the indoor season in the books, Cal Poly will now focus all of its attention on its outdoor season opener on March 6-8 when they compete in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
