SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Graduate student Davis Bove will look to become the fifth Mustang in program history to run a sub-four-minute mile when he competes in the Terrier DMR Challenge on Friday at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center.
Bove is the only Cal Poly track and field athlete making the trip to Boston to take part in the indoor meet. He will race in the men's mile at 4:05 p.m. PST Friday. You can follow the live results here and a livestream is available on FloTrack with the purchase of a subscription.
Three runners opened the indoor season for the Mustangs back on Dec. 2 at BU's Track & Tennis Center, which is widely regarded as one of the fastest indoor track facilities in the world. Aidan McCarthy and Carson Smith both took full advantage of the surface, posting sub-four-minute mile times. McCarthy obliterated his own school record in the event, posting a blistering time of 3:56.09 — the 28th fastest in Division I this season. Smith joined the sub-four club at the meet with a time of 3:59.41, which was No. 2 in program history until Spencer Pickren surpassed him at the UW Invitational on Jan. 27 by recording a time of 3:59.38.
In addition to McCarthy, Pickren and Smith, former Mustang Xian Shively ran a sub-four mile time last year (3:59.74).
The Cal Poly men's mile crew checked in at No. 12 in the latest USTFCCCA #EventSquad Rankings, reaching a high of No. 6 nationally earlier this season.
Bove is a two-time Second Team All-American in the men's indoor mile, placing 12th at the 2021 NCAA Championships and 15th in 2022 while competing for LSU. Bove shattered LSU's school record in the indoor mile in 2022 with a personal best of 3:56.38 and he will be seeking to surpass that time in Boston on Friday.
This fall during his first season as a Mustang, Bove was crowned Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, winning the individual title at the conference meet and helping the Cal Poly men capture their second consecutive Big West Championship. The Franklin, Tenn. native went on to place eighth at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento with a personal-best 10K time (29:32.6) — tied for the second-highest individual finish by a Mustang on the men's side at the West Regional in program history and the best since Sean Ricketts took eighth in 2003. The performance allowed Bove to earn All-Region honors in cross country for the third time in his career and secure his spot at the NCAA Championships in Virginia, where he finished 108th overall.
Earlier this indoor season at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 13, Bove established a program record in the men's 1,000-meter (2:20.97).
Following Friday's action, a couple of Cal Poly athletes will travel to Seattle on Feb. 23-24 to compete in the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite hosted by the University of Washington.
