Mustang Men’s Swimmers Finish Day One at UNLV in 3rd Place for Team Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — On day one of Cal Poly's final invitational in the 2024 calendar year, the Mustang men placed 3rd of seven programs while the women came in 7th of eight as multiple individual performances highlighted an altogether solid opening day.
Once again, Evan Yoo and Drew Huston led the way with a pair of top-5 finishes in their respective races. Yoo qualified for the 500 Free finals, placing 2nd with a 4:27.44 time that came within .35 seconds of making the program's top marks list. Huston placed 4th in the 200 IM (1:50.17) for Cal Poly's second-highest individual placement of the day.
A number of finalists came from the women's side, including top-15 placements from Olivia Sundgren (500 Free 5:01.91), Mikaela Gomez (200 IM 2:06.88), Rhian Neitzel (200 IM 2:07.32), Katherine Treacy (200 IM 2:08.82), and Summer Cheng (50 Free 23.97). Neitzel improved on her 200 IM (2:06.86) in the finals, which was the Mustang women's best time of the day in that event.
While Sundgren's 14th place finish through the finals was the womens' highest individual finish of the day, a pair of relay teams took 13th with Summer Cheng, Melia Costa, Kristin Der, and Ella Bettencourt enjoyed a 1:35.96 time in the 200 Free Relay and Der, Amalie Claus-Udarbe, Cheng, and Bettencourt timed 3:51.05 in the 400 Medley Relay.
In total, the Mustang men put up 16 individual finalists, highlighted by Yoo and Huston but also impressively followed up by a number of top-10 performances. Alex Seybold (4:31.49) qualified for the 500 Free finals in 6th place but improved to 5th in the finals, Alex Power (1:50.57) and Luke Reyes (1:51.05) placed 7th and 9th respectively in the 200 IM, and Nick Elliott (20.37) swam a fantastic 50 Free in placed 6th.
Reyes greatly improved on his 200 IM time during the finals for the best time in that event by a Cal Poly swimmer today (1:49.50) but remained in 9th place after the finals.
Elsewhere, Lucas Meneghetti (4:34.09), Cameron Schwantes (4:34.83), and Cole Groom (4:41.56) all placed top-25 in the 500 Free finals. Camilo Vargas (1:52.22), Yuki Hayashi (1:52.98), and Scott Iannaccone (1:52.82) all improved their 200 IM times from prelims to the finals.
Lastly from the individual side, seven of Cal Poly's 16 total finals qualifications on the day came from the 50 Free with Elliott (20.37) flanked by Lucas Crother-Collado (20.48), Huston (20.51), Jonathan Butler (20.52), Evan O'Connell (20.63), Krishna Clarke (20.72), and Jaxon Bruzgul (21.06) all finishing in the top-32.
The 200 Free Relay team of Crother-Collado, Elliott, O'Connell, and Butler (1:20.43) finished 5th place and came .08 seconds off the program record. Yoo, Clarke, Bruzgul, and Finn Schlamp finished in 10th place (1:22.40).
Huston, Yoo, Clarke, and Butler finished 3rd place in the 400 Medley Relay (3:13.43), while Sam Seybold, Alex Seybold, Schlamp, and O'Connell (3:15.99) finished 5th place and Iannaccone, Reyes, Anthony Moskalenko, and Crother-Collado (3:19.99) finished 13th place.
