Mustangs Fall in Overtime Saturday at San Jose State

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate Owen Koonce (above) scored a career best 32 points and fellow guard Jarred Hyder added 18 Saturday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after erasing a 13-point second-half deficit – fell in overtime at San Jose State, 107-100.
Freshman guard Peter Bandelj finished with a career best 16 points and junior guard Luka Tarlac – on 6-for-7 shooting – enjoyed a collegiate best 12 for Cal Poly (5-7), which trailed San Jose State (6-6), 77-64, with nine minutes to play before a 25-point outburst punctuated by a Hyder three-pointer handed the Mustangs an 89-86 edge with 46 seconds remaining.
Two free throws from Spartans guard Josh Uduje cut the host's gap to 90-88 with 23 seconds left and San Jose State – forced to foul – sent Cal Poly graduate guard Mac Riniker to the line. Riniker, who scored 11 points, sank just one of his two opportunities and after Uduje missed a three-point attempt, forward Sadaidriene Hall buried his with three seconds on the clock to force the second overtime matchup between the two sides in as many seasons.
San Jose State produced the first two buckets of the extra period and, after the Mustangs tied the matchup through two Koonce free throws and a Riniker layup, the Spartans kept Cal Poly to just one field goal during the final three-and-a-half minutes.
Koonce led Cal Poly with eight rebounds while Riniker distributed a game high six assists.
With two non-conference games remaining before Cal Poly resumes Big West action Jan. 2, the Mustangs host Denver on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in the final home matchup of 2024. Tip time inside Mott Athletics Center on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Behind a 13-for-19 shooting start Saturday, Cal Poly utilized three-pointers from freshman guard Guzman Vasilic and Hyder to surge into a 32-22 lead eight minutes before the break.
San Jose State, however, responded by keeping the Mustangs to just a solitary field goal during the ensuing five minutes as the Spartans grabbed a 35-34 advantage. San Jose State closed the period with a 10-4 run as the Mustangs – despite shooting 56.7 (17-for-30) percent during the first half – trailed heading into the locker room, 45-40.
Into the second half, San Jose State led by as much as 77-64 with nine minutes to play and 80-71 with seven-and-a-half left before a Koonce jumper, Bandelj three-pointer and Riniker layup cut the gap to two points.
Cal Poly then tied the matchup twice before Hyder's three-pointer placed the Mustangs in front, 89-86.
