Mustangs Outlast Grambling State for 82-79 Tuesday Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Guards Isaac Jessup (above) and Owen Koonce co-led five Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures Tuesday evening with 17 points apiece as the Cal Poly men's basketball program produced an 82-79 victory against Grambling State inside Mott Athletics Center.
Graduate guards Jarred Hyder and Mac Riniker finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Cal Poly (4-4), which led by as much as 17 during the first half and 11 at the break before defending SWAC champion and 2024 NCAA Tournament qualifier Grambling State (1-5) tied the matchup with six minutes remaining, 69-69.
Jessup, however, broke the deadlock with his fifth three-pointer of the night and after the Tigers clawed to an 80-79 deficit with a minute remaining following a jumper by forward Ernest Ross, Cal Poly closed out the victory with two Hyder free throws with three seconds to play.
Junior forward Luka Tarlac added a Cal Poly best 10 points as the Mustangs shot 50.8 (32-for-63) percent from floor during their first all-time matchup with Grambling State.
Koonce grabbed a game high eight rebounds while Hyder enjoyed a career high seven assists.
Cal Poly returns to the road to resume action, visiting Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 30. Tip time from Maples Pavilion is 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Trailing 17-10 after seven minutes despite two early Jessup three-pointers, Cal Poly recovered with a 25-6 run to go up 33-23 five minutes before the break. Shooting 56.3 (18-for-32) percent during the first half, Cal Poly ultimately took a 44-33 lead into the locker room following freshman guard Guzman Vasilic's buzzer-beating baseline jumper.
Limiting Cal Poly to just three buckets inside the opening six minutes of the second half, Grambling State shortened its deficit to 52-45. Seven minutes later, a three-pointer from Tigers guard Chilaydrien Newton capped a 13-4 Grambling State run that dropped Cal Poly's advantage to 66-65 with seven-and-a-half to play.
