SEATTLE, Wash. — Sophomore Rory Devaney shattered his own school record in the men's indoor weight throw and junior Maya Holman shaved nearly a tenth of a second off her No. 4 mark in program history in the women's 60-meter hurdles to highlight action for Cal Poly track and field during the opening day of the UW Invitational on Friday.
A total of 20 athletes competed for the Mustangs on the first day of the meet inside Dempsey Indoor and a handful had standout performances.
Holman participated in a pair of events Friday, recording personal bests in both. In the 60 hurdles, the Vacaville, Calif. native posted a PR in prelims and then bested it in the final, running a time of 8.75 seconds to place sixth overall and remain at No. 4 all-time in Cal Poly history in the event. The multi-event star capped the day by running an all-conditions personal record in the 200 (26.56).
Devaney, who established a program record in the men's weight throw at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 13, broke his own school record, tossing the weight throw 63 feet, 5 inches. The 2023 NCAA West Preliminaries qualifier in the hammer throw bested his previous school record by 9.25 inches.
Graduate student Shelby Daniele continued her impressive start to the indoor season by placing second in the women's 200 with a time of 24.73 seconds. During the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 13, Daniele obliterated her own indoor school record in the event (24.53).
In his first meet as a Mustang, freshman Ben Kin Ho Tsang — who broke the Hong Kong U18 400 hurdles record in 2021 — surpassed Joey Souto's 2023 school record in the men's 60 hurdles, recording a time of 8.59 seconds despite getting tripped up by a competitor in the lane next to him. He placed 15th overall in the event.
Junior Melody Nwagwu earned a fourth-place finish in the women's triple jump with an indoor personal best (39-3.25), while junior Lariel Henley matched her collegiate best in the high jump (5-5) to secure a sixth-place finish. In her first action as a Mustang, freshman Kalia Estes — a Mukilteo, Wash. native — recorded a PR of 8.99 in the 60 hurdles.
In the men's 3,000, Aidan Dimick ran a personal best of 8:11.15 to capture third in his heat and 19th out of 86 runners. He shaved over a second off his PR and is currently No. 3 in school history in the event.
Action on the final day of the UW Invitational starts at 9 a.m. Saturday.
