Mustangs Top Zags 6-1 to Cap Perfect Road Trip

SPOKANE, Wash. — For the second straight day, Cal Poly women's tennis captured the doubles point and won five of six singles matches to roll to a 6-1 victory over its opponent, defeating Gonzaga on Sunday inside the Stevens Center in Spokane.
The decisive win capped off a perfect 2-0 road trip for the Mustangs to open the dual portion of their season. Cal Poly took down Montana (0-2) 6-1 on Saturday.
Cal Poly grabbed the doubles point by emerging victories on courts No. 1 and No. 2. Fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle teamed up for an impressive 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot, and graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse secured a 6-1 victory at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point. Both pairings improved to 2-0 on the season.
Sophomores Kennedy Buntrock and Alexandra Ozerets were leading 5-3 at No. 3 when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles, Peyton, Buntrock and Mosse all captured victories in straight sets to improve to 2-0 on the season. Buntrock clinched the dual win for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4. Thanks to her two wins this weekend, Peyton is currently No. 2 in Division I program history in career winning percentage in dual singles matches with a 27-11 overall record.
At No. 2 singles, LaMette picked up her first victory of the season, winning a super tiebreaker against Gonzaga's Kianna Oda 10-6.
In a back-and-forth affair at No. 6, Ozerets snagged a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Gonzaga's Lia Espinal.
Peyton, Buntrock, Mosse and Ozerets all went undefeated in singles and doubles across Cal Poly's two matches in Spokane this weekend.
Cal Poly returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3, for its home and Big West opener against UC Davis. The match at the Mustang Tennis Complex is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
