SPOKANE, Wash. — In its first dual of the season, the Cal Poly women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Montana on Saturday at the Stevens Center, sweeping doubles and winning five of the six singles matches.
The Mustangs (1-0) opened their 2024 campaign with a dominant showing in doubles play. Graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse helped the team get off to a roaring start, winning 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot. Then fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle clinched the doubles point for Cal Poly in the neutral-site match with a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 spot. Last year, the Dunkle sisters secured All-Big West Second Team honors in doubles with a team-best 15-8 record at No. 1, tied for the fifth-most dual victories by a pairing in a season in Division I program history.
Sophomores Kennedy Buntrock and Alexandra Ozerets capped off a perfect day for Cal Poly in doubles, grabbing a 7-5 win at No. 3.
The Mustangs kept things rolling in singles play as Ozerets secured a double bagel (6-0, 6-0 win) at the No. 6 spot to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead. The triumph allowed the 2023 Big West Freshman of the Year to improve to 9-2 in her career at No. 6.
Mosse made quick work of her opponent as well, capturing a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 5. Mosse, a transfer from Jacksonville State, impressed in her first dual as a Mustang.
Cal Poly jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and clinched the dual win over the Grizzlies (0-2) with a three-set victory from Delanie at No. 1. It was her first career match playing at No. 1.
Peyton and Buntrock were able to emerge victorious in a pair of tightly-contested singles matches. At No. 3, Peyton won the first set 6-4 before dropping a thrilling second-set 6-7 (6-8). She staved off Montana's Grace Haugen in a super tiebreaker, winning it 10-4. Buntrock also won the first set and dropped the second in her match at No. 4, but she bounced back to secure a 7-6 (7-5) third-set victory.
LaMette claimed the first set in her battle at the No. 2 spot 7-5, but came up short in the second and third sets.
The Dunkles, Buntrock, Mosse and Ozerets all went undefeated in singles and doubles against Montana.
Cal Poly completes its road trip to Spokane at 10 a.m. Sunday when the Mustangs take on Gonzaga inside the Stevens Center.
