Six Program Records Fall at UW Indoor Preview
1/13/2024 8:48:00 PM | Track and Field
SEATTLE, Wash. — Six program records were set as Cal Poly track and field kicked off the New Year with an historic showing at the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday.
Graduate student Shelby Daniele (women's indoor 200-meter) and junior Corban Payne (men's indoor shot put) both shattered their own school records, sophomore MacGregor TeSelle broke the program record in the men's indoor 200, and graduate student Davis Bove (men's 1,000), senior Joey Souto (men's 600) and sophomore Rory Devaney (men's weight throw) all established school records during the meet inside Dempsey Indoor.
30 Mustangs competed in the team's biggest meet so far this indoor season and 14 athletes made their indoor debut.
TeSelle and Payne led the way for Cal Poly, securing first-place finishes in their respective events. TeSelle won the men's 200 with a blistering lifetime best of 21.52 seconds, breaking Tyler Esteves' school record set last indoor season. Payne tossed a personal best of 52 feet, 3.25 inches to win the men's shot put and smash his own school record in the event, which he established last season.
Last year, men competed indoors for Cal Poly for the first time in Division I program history, allowing several athletes to establish school records.
Daniele shredded the Mustang history books last season, and on Saturday she picked up right where she left off. The Clovis, Calif. native recorded a time of 24.53 seconds in the women's 200 to finish fifth out of 59 runners, breaking her own school record by .16 seconds. Daniele also nearly qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash, securing 10th in the prelims with a time of 7.66 — .04 seconds off her indoor personal best.
In his first indoor meet, Devaney posted a mark of 62-7 to capture second in the men's weight throw and establish a program record in the event. Last year as a true freshman, the San Luis Obispo native obliterated a 62-year-old school record in the hammer throw during the outdoor season.
Souto became the first Mustang on the men's side to run a 600-meter indoors, finishing with a time of 1:20.61 to take third in the event and establish a school record.
In the 1,000, Bove and Carson Smith became the first men's runners in program history to compete in the event. Bove grabbed seventh with a time of 2:20.67 (a school record) and Smith secured 14th (2:26.25). Smith opened the indoor season on Dec. 2 with a 3:59.41 mile time, becoming the third Mustang in program history to run a sub-four minute mile.
Junior Maya Holman had a standout day, qualifying for the finals in the women's 60 hurdles and placing seventh (8.90), and recording an indoor PR in the high jump (5-3) to earn eighth. In her Mustang debut, freshman Melanie Castelli took sixth in the high jump (5-3).
Junior Anna Grexton, No. 5 in program history in the women's weight throw, recorded a PR in the event (47-11) to place sixth and sophomore Tatiana Cornejo ran a lifetime best in the 3,000 (9:36.80). Cornejo is currently fifth all-time in the event. Senior Chase Walter finished seventh (22.46) in the men's 200.
Cal Poly heads back to Seattle on Jan. 26-27 to take part in the UW Invitational.
