Track & Field Heads to Seattle for UW Indoor Preview

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program resumes its indoor season Saturday, sending 30 athletes to Seattle to compete in the UW Indoor Preview inside Dempsey Indoor.

Aidan McCarthy, Carson Smith and Chris Caudillo officially opened the indoor season for the Mustangs on Dec. 2 when they traveled across the country to take part in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University. McCarthy shattered his own school record in the men's indoor mile at the meet, running a time of 3:56.09 — second fastest in Division I so far this season. Smith, a sophomore, also ran a sub-four-minute mile, becoming just the third Mustang ever to do so. His time of 3:59.41 is currently the fourth-fastest in Division I.

Saturday's meet will mark the first action of the indoor season for the Mustangs' sprinters, jumpers and throwers on both the men's and women's sides. Last year, men competed indoors for Cal Poly for the first time in Division I program history, allowing a handful of Mustangs to establish school records. A number of Mustang distance runners will also be taking part in the UW Indoor Preview.

Smith (men's 1,000-meter) is one of several notable Mustangs that will be competing in the meet. Davis Bove (men's 1,000), Shelby Daniele (women's 60, 200), Rory Devaney (men's weight throw), Melody Nwagwu (women's 60, long jump), Spencer Pickren (men's mile) and Jadyn Snaer (women's 60, 200) are all set to hit the track in Seattle.

A total of 13 Mustangs will be making their indoor debut on Saturday.

Cal Poly will head back to Dempsey Indoor on Jan 26-27 to participate in the UW Invitational.
