Mustangs Fall to Gonzaga in Home Opener
9/7/2023 10:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore forward Caylie Button scored her first collegiate goal, but the Cal Poly women's soccer team fell to No. 23 Gonzaga 4-1 on Thursday night at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
Gonzaga (6-1-0), the third highest-scoring team in the nation, found the back of the net in the third, 10th, 52nd and 76th minutes, but Button came through late to get the Mustangs (1-3-1) on the scoresheet.
In the 87th minute, Cal Poly earned a corner kick and sophomore Annie Larson played a perfect ball in from the right side to the back post. Sophomore Brennan Cole was there to head the cross across the front of the net and Button buried a shot with her left foot past Gonzaga's goalkeeper. It was Button's first career goal in her 21st appearance for the Mustangs. Larson also earned first career assist on the tally and Cole secured second assist of the season.
Cal Poly had a handful of other scoring opportunities throughout the night, including a pair from freshman Annika Smith. Making her fourth straight start, the Scottsdale, Arizona, native fired one over the crossbar in the seventh minute and then in the 57th minute nearly blasted a one-on-one chance with the Gonzaga goalkeeper to the back of the net.
In the 15th minute, freshman Sophia Moness (pictured above) steered a solid header on frame off a cross from sophomore Emily Lieber and in the 75th minute, sophomore Camryn Penn sent a scorching shot from just outside the left corner of the box on net.
Despite the scoreline, the Mustangs controlled possession throughout most of the match and nearly matched the Bulldogs in shots as Gonzaga finished with 15 and Cal Poly with 12.
Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made one save for the Mustangs. Junior center back Emma Brown played all 90 minutes in her 12th consecutive match.
Cal Poly returns to action at noon Sunday to host No. 8 Santa Clara at Mustang Memorial Field. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
