Cal Poly Draws with Spartans in Exhibition

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's soccer and San Jose State played to a scoreless draw in an exhibition match Saturday night at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
In their final tuneup before opening the 2023 regular season, the Mustangs dominated the run of play, but were unable to breakthrough on the scoresheet against the defending Mountain West champion Spartans. Cal Poly outshot SJSU 12-1 in the match.
Early on, chances were limited for both sides, however, the Mustangs generated maybe their best scoring opportunity of the match in the 40th minute. Sophomore Emily Lieber (pictured above) played a cross into the right side of the box and found the foot of senior McKenna Carbon, who blasted a shot at the SJSU goalkeeper and saw her rebound opportunity soar just wide of the net.
Cal Poly carried a 5-1 shot advantage into the break, and continued their firm grip on possession in the second half.
Redshirt freshman Sophia Minnite fired a shot just over the crossbar in the 69th minute and in the 70th minute senior Kate Reedy nearly found the back of the net. Freshman Jaycee DeFazio played a perfect cross into the box and Reedy rose up and headed the ball just wide of the right post.
As the clock winded down, the Mustangs continued to push. In the 88th minute, freshman Anna Babinski forced the SJSU goalkeeper to make a save and with just over 30 seconds left, freshman Ali Evans blasted a shot toward the left post that was turned away by the Spartans' Drew Novaes.
Reedy led Cal Poly with four shots and junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel saved the only shot she saw. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson, a 2022 San Luis Obispo High grad, played the entire second half in net for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs travel to Fresno State on Thursday for a 7 p.m. season opener. Cal Poly returns home next Sunday, Aug. 20, to host its second and final exhibition this fall.
