Halladay Scores, Mustangs Earn 1-1 Draw in Opener at Fresno State
8/17/2023 10:34:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FRESNO, Calif. — Sophomore Jessie Halladay buried her first collegiate goal, but Cal Poly women's soccer had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Fresno State in its regular season opener Thursday night at Bulldog Soccer Stadium.
Offensive chances were difficult to come by in the first half — the two sides combined for just four shots in the opening 45 minutes — but the pace and action picked up in the second half.
The first dangerous scoring opportunity in the second half came in the 55th minute when graduate transfer Whitney Wiley played a cross into the box that found the head of Maille Smith. The redshirt sophomore forward rose up and steered one toward the center of the net but Fresno State goalkeeper Kaydence Cortez-Garcia was there for the save.
In the 60th minute, junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel stepped up and made her first save of the night to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
The intensity of the match rose to a new level following a yellow card on sophomore Brennan Cole in the 70th minute. The Mustangs capitalized on the jolt of energy from the call just two minutes later when sophomore Emily Lieber blasted one on frame that was turned away. The Bulldogs answered with two shots of their own before a Cal Poly counter led to the first goal of the night.
In the 75th minute, sophomore Emily Lieber played one of her patented crosses into the box and Halladay crushed one with her right foot into the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. For the Loyola Marymount transfer, it was her first collegiate goal and her first point as a Mustang.
Then less than a minute later, Fresno State scored to even the match at 1-1.
In the 87th minute, Samuel showed why she was crowned the 2022 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, diving to her right to make an incredible save on Fresno State's Ciara Wilson to keep the match knotted at 1-1.
A brace was calling Halladay's name in the 89th minute when she soared a shot just over the top of the Fresno State net.
The Bulldogs outshot Cal Poly 11-6 in the match, but the Mustangs steered more on frame (4-3).
Cal Poly earned the only shot on goal in the opening half. In the 20th minute, sophomore Caylie Button found Halladay just outside the box and she blasted one on net that was turned away by the Fresno State goalkeeper.
Samuel finished with two saves in her 25th career start, and junior center backs Aynsley Conner and Emma Brown, a Preseason All-Big West selection, never came off the field.
Four freshmen made their collegiate debuts Thursday — Bailey Bracha, Sophia Moness, Kasia Wolf and Siena Urzua. Redshirt freshman Sophia Minnite also made her first collegiate appearance.
Cal Poly returns to Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital at noon Sunday to host its second and final exhibition match against Cal State Monterey Bay. Admission is free.
