SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer program hosts its second and final exhibition match of the season at noon Sunday against Division II Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Mustangs (0-0-1) opened their 2023 regular season campaign Thursday, earning a 1-1 draw at Fresno State thanks to a 75th-minute goal from sophomore forward Jessie Halladay and a clutch save by junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel in the closing moments.
In its first exhibition at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital on Aug. 12, Cal Poly and 2022 Mountain West champion San Jose State played to a scoreless draw but the Mustangs maintained a firm grip on the match throughout, outshooting the Spartans 12-1.
The shot Halladay buried into the back of the Fresno State net on Thursday was her first collegiate goal. The Los Gatos native transferred to Cal Poly in the spring after spending her freshman season at Loyola Marymount, and she is already leaving her mark as a Mustang.
Sophomore Emily Lieber, a 2022 Big West All-Freshman Team selection, assisted on Halladay's goal with a cross into the box. It was Lieber's fifth career assist.
Five Mustangs also made their collegiate debut in Thursday's season opener — redshirt freshman Sophia Minnite, and freshmen Bailey Bracha, Sophia Moness, Kasia Wolf and Siena Urzua.
Following their final exhibition Sunday, the Mustangs return to regular season action by heading to defending national champion and preseason No. 1 UCLA on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match. Cal Poly's home opener is set for Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. against Gonzaga.
