SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's soccer, the defending Big West regular season champions, announced the final addition to its 2023 roster during the first day of training camp Tuesday with University of New Hampshire transfer Whitney Wiley joining the Mustangs for the upcoming season.
Wiley, a Vienna, Virginia native, was an integral part of New Hampshire's attack the past four years and arrives in San Luis Obispo as a grad student with two years of eligibility left beginning this fall.
The forward/midfielder started in all 40 matches she appeared in during her New Hampshire career, tallying nine goals, four assists, four game-winners and 33 shots on goal. This past season, the UNH Student-Athlete of the Year honoree helped the Wildcats capture their second America East Championship in program history and first since 2014. She also played all 90 minutes in New Hampshire's first round defeat to Harvard in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
During the COVID-19 shortened spring 2021 season, Wiley led the Wildcats with two game winners and tied for the team high in goals with three. The America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete burst on the scene as a freshman for New Hampshire in 2019, starting in all 18 matches and finishing third on the team in points (13), goals (five) and assists (three) to secure America East All-Rookie Team honors and UNH's Most Outstanding Freshman Award.
Wiley was named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll throughout her New Hampshire and graduated from UNH summa cum laude with her bachelor's degree in hospitality management. She will be pursuing her master's in business administration at Cal Poly.
Wiley was a team captain and MVP in soccer, basketball and lacrosse at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Virginia, earning All-Conference honors in all three sports and a Second Team All-State selection in basketball. As a senior, she captained the Huskies to a Northern Virginia Independent School tournament title while leading the team in goals (21) and assists (seven).
Wiley, who played club for VYS Phoenix, said she chose to transfer to Cal Poly because "it's a very strong academic school that has an excellent soccer program as well as a beautiful campus."
Playing sports at the collegiate level runs deep in Wiley's family. Her father, David, was a member of the William & Mary football team from 1984-88, her mother, Jennifer, played on the William & Mary soccer team from 1986-90, and one of her sisters, Lindsey, recently wrapped up her soccer career at Colgate (2016-19).
Wiley is the third transfer in Cal Poly's 2023 class of newcomers, joining Jessie Halladay (Los Gatos, Calif. / LMU) and Brooke Golik (Northridge, Calif. / SMU). Halladay joined the Mustangs in the spring while Golik spent this spring on the Cal Poly beach volleyball team, where she earned All-Big West Second Team honors while playing alongside partner Delaney Peranich at the No. 3 spot. Prior to Cal Poly, Golik spent four years (2018-21) on the SMU women's soccer team, making 50 starts and logging over 4,500 minutes as a defender. Wiley is also the 15th and final member of the Mustangs' 2023 class.
