
Baron Szeto carded a career-best final-round 66 for a share of the Big West individual title Tuesday at La Quinta Country Club.

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- A 10-under-par four-person 278 total by Cal Poly on the final day of the 2023 Big West Men's Golf Championship was not enough to overcome Long Beach State on Tuesday at the La Quinta Country Club.
The total, 12th on the list of Cal Poly's all-time scores for a single round, clinched third place in the nine-team event with a six-under-par 858 aggregate on the 7,056-yard, par-72 course.
Long Beach State claimed the team title and the automatic berth in the NCAA regionals with a 12-under-par 852 total while Cal State Fullerton claimed the second spot at 10 under par.
Mustang sophomore Baron Szeto blazed through the final round with a six-under-par 66, the best round by any of the 45 golfers in the last 18 holes of play, and moved into a tie for first place with a five-under-par 211 total.
Ian Gilligan of Long Beach State and Russel Howlett of Cal State Fullerton also finished with 211 totals. Gilligan won the playoff on the 18th hole with a birdie.
Szeto is the third Mustang to claim at least a share of the conference's individual crown. The others were Travis Bertoni in 2005 and Justin De Los Santos in 2015.
Szeto's best career round as a Mustang featured six birdies and 12 pars. He birdied four consecutive holes on the front nine (4-7) as well as the 10th and 11th holes on the back nine.
Jackson Parrish, who opened with a 74 on Sunday, rallied with a 71 on Monday and a 68 Tuesday for a three-under-par 213 total and sixth place. His final round included six birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Ben Quick finished with a 72 for a one-under-par 215 total and a tie for eighth place with two other golfers. Quick signed a scorecard with two birdies, 14 pars and a pair of bogeys.
A 73 by Joey Zambri left him in a tie for 20th place with Josh Hu of UC Riverside, both finishing with 220 totals, while Austin Liu finished in a tie for 28th place with a 224 total following his final-round 72.
Parrish finished first in par-3 scoring at three under par while Szeto placed second in par-5 scoring at nine under par and fourth in par-4 scoring at two over par.
Quick's 37 pars over 54 holes was third-best in the tournament while Szeto's 14 birdies were No. 4.
Parrish was named to the All-Big West second team while Szeto earned honorable mention praise. Gilligan was named the conference's Golfer of the Year while Long Beach State teammate Jack Cantlay was named Freshman of the Year. Jason Drotter of Casl State Fullerton and Rob Murray of Long Beach State were named co-coaches of the year.
