ATLANTA, Ga. — Cal Poly women's tennis will cap off its 2022-23 season Saturday when the Mustangs take on No. 70 Wyoming in a consolation match at the inaugural Universal Tennis NIT Championship at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. The match starts at 9 a.m. EST.
On Wednesday, Cal Poly (14-10) fell short 4-1 in its quarterfinal match against No. 62 Colorado. The dual, the Mustangs' first postseason match in 12 years, was played indoors due to severe weather.
In that loss, graduate student Kim Bhunu secured Cal Poly's first singles victory in postseason play in Division I program history, dismantling Colorado's No. 1 in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Her win also allowed the Mustangs to grab their first postseason match point in Division I program history.
Bhunu and freshman Kennedy Buntrock picked up a commanding 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles against the Buffaloes as well, allowing the doubles tandem to earn its eight straight victory and improve to 14-5 this spring, currently tied for the sixth-most dual victories by a doubles pairing in a season in Division I program history.
Wyoming defeated Appalachian State, the fourth seed in the eight-team tournament, 4-2 in the NIT quarterfinals on Wednesday before falling to top-seeded TCU 4-1 in the semifinals Friday.
The Cowgirls (15-11) won their first outright Mountain West regular season title in program history this season, before losing to San Jose State 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Tournament.
Saturday's match will be the first meeting all-time between Cal Poly and Wyoming.
