VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sophomore southpaw Noah Larkin earned his first victory of the 2023 season and Ryan Stafford knocked in three runs as Cal Poly completed a midweek sweep of its three games against Fresno State with an 11-6 victory Tuesday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
In outscoring the Bulldogs 37-14 in the trio of non-conference games, the Mustangs extended their winning streak to three games for the second time this year, improving to 19-31 for the season. Fresno State, which has earned a berth in next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament in Fresno, fell to 27-25.
Larkin (1-0) allowed two runs and a pair of hits over five innings for the victory with no walks and one strikeout. He retired the side in order three times before giving up two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Travis Welker in the fifth.
Cal Poly had already built a 7-0 lead in its final non-conference game of the year before the Bulldogs crept back into the game with one or two runs in the fifth through eighth frames, but the Mustangs maintained a comfortable distance with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Stafford's first-inning groundout scored Ryan Fenn, who had tripled, for a 1-0 lead and Cal Poly added five more in the third and one in the fourth for its 7-0 advantage.
Two Bulldog errors, a bases-loaded walk, a run-scoring groundout by Collin Villegas and an RBI single by Jake Steels accounted for Cal Poly's five runs in the third. Steels also doubled in the fourth and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly by Fenn.
Taison Corio's RBI single in the fifth made it 8-2 and Cal Poly tallied three more runs in the sixth on Stafford's RBI double down the left-field line, another run-scoring groundout by Villegas and an RBI single by Joe Yorke to left-center field.
Steels, Fenn, Stafford, Yorke and Tate Shimao all collected a pair of hits as Cal Poly outhit Fresno State 12-7. Third baseman Murf Gray singled twice and second baseman Payton Allen added a double for the Bulldogs.
While Larkin earned the victory, the loss was charged to Jaykob Acosta (1-3), who surrendered six runs (four earned), three hits and a pair of walks over two-plus innings. Acosta also suffered the loss against Cal Poly a week earlier, allowing seven runs and eight hits over two frames.
Cal Poly hit .390 in the three games against Fresno State with 12 doubles, three triples and five home runs. Shimao led the way, going 7-for-12 at the plate, while Stafford was 8-for-14 with three doubles, a home run and six RBIs and Yorke 7-for-14 with two doubles, a pair of home runs and nine RBIs.
Cal Poly's pitching staff compiled a 3.00 ERA and held the Bulldogs to a .212 team batting average.
Fresno State leads the all-time series, 120-70, but the Mustangs have won 26 of their last 37 games against the Bulldogs, including three of five games during Fresno State's national championship season in 2008. Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee is 28-13 against the Bulldogs.
Cal Poly faces two of the top three teams in the Big West Conference to close out the 2023 season, visiting third-place UC Santa Barbara on Friday through Sunday and hosting first-place Cal State Fullerton on Memorial Day weekend inside Baggett Stadium. The Titans are 17-7 in Big West games, a game ahead of the Gauchos (16-8).
Second-place UC San Diego, 18-9 in the conference, is in its third year of transition to NCAA Division I and ineligible for the conference title and postseason playoff berth.
