SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Santa Barbara handed Cal Poly its fourth shutout of the 2023 baseball season, 7-0, on an overcast Friday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium as Matt Ager and two relievers combined on a five-hitter.
Ager (5-3) struck out eight and walked two over seven innings for the victory, scattering five hits, while Hudson Barrett and Sam Whiting each threw one scoreless hitless frame for the Gauchos.
Cal Poly fell to 19-32 for the season and 9-16 in Big West games while UC Santa Barbara moved into a tie for second place with Cal State Fullerton, both 17-8, and improved to 34-16 overall. The Titans fell 2-1 to Long Beach State on Friday at Goodwin Field.
First-place UC San Diego, ineligible for the conference's automatic postseason bid as the Tritons are in their third year of transition to NCAA Division I, is 19-9 after defeating UC Riverside 11-3.
Ivan Brethowr and Nick Oakley belted solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, for a 2-0 Gaucho lead and UC Santa Barbara broke the game open with a five-run eighth-inning rally highlighted by Oakley's three-run double into the right-field corner.
Cal Poly had numerous scoring opportunities, stranding 11 runners on the base paths.
The Mustangs opened the game with a pair of two-out hits but a strikeout ended the threat. Cal Poly also had two runners on base via a hit batter and walk in the fifth but left both on base.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but a strikeout and a fly ball to right field kept the Mustangs off the scoreboard again.
Trailing 2-0, another hit batter and walk in the eighth put Mustang runners at first and second with two outs before Tate Shimao's long fly ball to right field was caught by Broc Mortensen at the fence.
Cal Poly's five hits included two singles by Aaron Casillas and a double by Ryan Stafford. Brethowr singled, doubled and homered for UC Santa Barbara while Oakley, Jared Sundstrom and LeTrey McCollum each added two hits.
The Gauchos have beaten the Mustangs eight consecutive times.
Cal Poly junior right-hander Bryce Warrecker (3-6) suffered the loss despite striking out a career-high nine Gaucho batters. The Santa Barbara High School graduate allowed one walk and two runs while scattering six hits in his first career start against UCSB.
Warrecker, who has not won since April 14 at CSU Bakersfield, has been given two or fewer runs of support in seven of his starts this season, including three shutouts.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. with Cal Poly to send sophomore right-hander Steven Brooks (4-1, 6.00 ERA) to the mound, likely against UC Santa Barbara junior southpaw Mike Gutierrez (4-2, 1.80 ERA).
Sunday's series finale starts at 1 o'clock.
