UCSB Clinches Big West Series Against Cal Poly with 4-2 Victory

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Solo home runs by Zander Darby and Broc Mortensen and 11 strikeouts recorded by three UC Santa Barbara pitchers powered the No. 27 Gauchos to a 4-2 victory over Cal Poly in the middle game of a Big West Conference baseball series Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
In clinching the series -- the Gauchos won 7-0 Friday -- UC Santa Barbara improved to 35-16 overall and 18-8 in Big West games. The Gauchos have won nine straight games against the Mustangs in the Blue-Green Rivalry.
UC Santa Barbara moved a game in front of Cal State Fullerton for second place in the Big West as the Titans fell 7-4 to Long Beach State on Saturday. The Titans, 17-9 in conference games, have lost eight straight since winning a series at CSUN two weeks ago.
First-place UC San Diego (20-9 in Big West contests) maintained its half-game lead over UC Santa Barbara with a 10-6 triumph at UC Riverside, scoring all 10 runs in the third inning. The Tritons, in their third year of transition to NCAA Division I, are ineligible for a postseason berth and have the bye in the Big West schedule next weekend.
Cal Poly fell to 19-33 and 9-17.
All the scoring by UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly occurred in the first half of the game.
Darby hit his seventh home run of the year with one out in the first inning and the Gauchos added two more runs in the second for a 3-0 lead on three singles and a Mustang throwing error.
Cal Poly tallied its first run in the third frame as Wyatt King doubled and eventually came home on a two-out Gaucho infield error. After UCSB got that run back in the fourth, King hit his fourth home run of the year leading off the fifth to make it 4-2.
Neither team scored the rest of the way. Cal Poly had two runners on base with two outs in the eighth, but a fly ball to right field ended the threat. The Mustangs also brought the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth as Evan Cloyd drew a two-out walk, but King, who thought he fouled off an 0-2 pitch, instead was thrown out at first base for the final out of the game.
After a quick conference, the umpires ruled that a foul tip is not reviewable.
Cal Poly, which compiled a .345 team batting average in winning a non-conference series at Utah last weekend and hit .358 while scoring 42 runs in a five-game stretch against Fresno State and the Utes, winning four of the contests, has been held to two runs and nine hits in the first two games against the Gauchos, hitting .143.
With his double and home run, King had half of Cal Poly's four hits Saturday. Jake Steels and Ryan Stafford added singles.
Darby and John Newman Jr. each produced two hits for UC Santa Barbara.
Southpaw Mike Gutierrez, who missed five of six starts due to injury from April 1 through May 7, pitched the first four innings in his return at Long Beach State last weekend and tossed three frames Saturday, allowing one unearned run and one hit with four strikeouts.
Tyler Bremner (5-4) earned the victory, pitching 4 2/3 innings in relief and striking out six with one run and three hits. Hudson Barrett secured the final four outs for his sixth save.
The loss was charged to Mustang sophomore right-hander Steven Brooks (4-2) as he gave up four runs (three earned) and six hits over 4 1/3 innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Junior right-hander Ryan Baum hurled 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Brooks, striking out five Gauchos. Baum has not allowed an earned run in his last three relief appearances on the mound (UC Davis, Utah and UC Santa Barbara), lowering his ERA from 6.44 to 4.48 with 13 strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings.
Stafford, who threw out one Gaucho runner trying to steal Friday, added two more Saturday. The sophomore catcher has thrown out 11 base stealers this season while picking off three more runners on the base paths. A year ago, Stafford also threw out 11 would-be base stealers and picked off four other runners.
Cal Poly was 1-for-10 with runners on base, 1-for-11 with two outs and 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position Saturday.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock. Cal Poly will start graduate student southpaw Travis Weston (2-3, 6.88 ERA) on the mound, facing UC Santa Barbara junior right-hander JD Callahan (2-1, 4.21 ERA).
