SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Southpaw Jakob Wright struck out 11 over five innings for his first collegiate victory and Cal Poly scored four runs in the fourth frame to snap a 2-2 tie en route to a 9-5 win over No. 27 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Wright teamed with starter Travis Weston and closer Kyle Scott in striking out 18 Gaucho batters while Jake Steels and Taison Corio each drove in two runs for the Mustangs, who snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Gauchos and salvaged a win in the three-game Big West Conference series.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs reached the 20-win mark for the season, improving to 20-33 overall and 10-17 for eighth place in the Big West.
UC Santa Barbara slipped back into a tie for second place with Cal State Fullerton, both 18-9 in the conference. The Titans defeated Long Beach State 9-1 to snap an eight-game skid Sunday.
UC San Diego wrapped up its season with a 7-4 win at UC Riverside, solidifying its hold on first place in the Big West at 21-9. The Tritons, in their third year of transition to Division I, are ineligible for postseason play.
UC Santa Barbara concludes its regular season with three games at Hawai'i next weekend while Cal State Fullerton visits Cal Poly for a Big West series.
Weston allowed two runs and five hits over three innings with five strikeouts while Wright gave up one run and two hits in a season-high five innings of work on the mound, throwing 94 pitches. Wright's 11 strikeouts are a single-game high for any Mustang pitcher this season.
Scott struck out two in his one-inning stint on the mound.
Aaron Casillas produced his sixth three-hit game and 24th multiple-hit contest of the season with a double and two singles, knocking in Cal Poly's first run with an RBI double in the second inning. Corio made it 2-0 with a grounder to second base.
After UCSB tied the score in the third, Cal Poly regained the upper hand with a four-run four-inning uprising. Corio and Wyatt King drew bases-loaded walks, Steels was hit by a pitch with the sacks filled and Evan Cloyd singled to left field for an RBI and a 6-2 Mustang lead.
An RBI single by Steels in the sixth made it 7-3 and Ryan Stafford concluded Cal Poly's scoring with a two-run home run down the right-field line in the eighth, his seventh round-tripper of the year.
Stafford and Yorke each had two-hit games at the plate as Cal Poly outhit UCSB 12-8. Steels was hit by a pitch three times, tying a school Division I record accomplished by four other Mustangs.
Catcher Aaron Parker was the lone Gaucho with two hits, including a two-run home run in the ninth inning.
The loss was charged to UCSB starter JD Callahan (2-2) as he surredered five runs and four hits over 3 1/3 innings. The Gauchos used five pitchers in the 3-hour, 24-minute game.
