IRVINE, Calif. — Rachel Victor (pictured above) ran the second-fastest time in school history in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase to highlight action for Cal Poly track and field at the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine on Friday.
Four of the Mustangs' top distance runners on the women's side competed in the meet and Victor had an unbelievable performance.
Victor was 0.5 seconds away from shattering Diana George's 2014 school record in the women's 3,000 steeplechase (10:15.93), posting a lifetime best of 10:16.43 to capture second in the event and move to No. 2 on Cal Poly's all-time list. The time is the second best in the Big West this season and currently No. 30 in the West Region.
In the women's mile, Misty Diaz (4:49.66) and Tatiana Cornejo (4:49.92) placed seventh and eighth respectively. Diaz bested her previous personal best by over 30 seconds.
Sydnie Rivas was the other Mustang that participated in the meet, finishing seventh in the 5,000-meter with a time of 16:51.80.
Cal Poly also opened the Fresno State Invitational on Friday, competing in the men's and women's hammer throw at Warmerdam Field.
Corban Payne led the way in the men's hammer, capturing fourth with a personal best of 193 feet, 5 inches, remaining at No. 5 in school history in the event. Noah Bultman also tossed a personal best of 186 feet, 6 inches to secure sixth and move to No. 8 on Cal Poly's all-time list.
Freshman Rory Devaney, the school record holder in the men's hammer throw, took fifth (191-7) in the event, while Devon Cetti grabbed seventh (184-7).
Action at the Fresno State Invitational resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with the men's hammer throw. You can follow the live results here.
