SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the second time this season, freshman Rory Devaney has earned Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors.
The 2022 San Luis Obispo High grad is Cal Poly's first repeat Big West weekly award winner this season. On April 4, he took home the distinction for the first time in his career after shattering a 62-year-old school record in the men's hammer throw.
During the Mustangs' final home meet Friday at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex, Devaney captured not one, but two event victories. First in the men's hammer throw, he recorded a mark of 202 feet, 2 inches, just two inches off his school record (202-4). Then in the discus, he tossed a personal best of 176 feet, 8 inches to move up to No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the event.
The performance was just the latest in an impressive freshman campaign for the San Luis Obispo native. Devaney has placed first in the discus at four meets this season, while securing the top spot in the hammer twice.
Devaney currently owns the third best mark in the Big West this season in both the discus and the hammer. His personal best in the hammer this spring (202-4) is currently ranked No. 44 in the West Region.
Devaney is the first Mustang since Aris Borjas in 2007 to receive multiple Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week awards in a single season.
Devaney and most of the Cal Poly track and field team is set to compete in the Fresno State Invitational this Friday and Saturday. A few of the Mustang distance runners on the women's side will head south to run the 5,000-meter at the Steve Scott Invitational on Friday hosted by UC Irvine.
