SAN LUIS OBISPO – Fourth-year head coach John Smith and the Cal Poly men's basketball team enjoyed the program's second offseason addition during a three-day window with the announcement that 6-3 point guard Jarred Hyder has joined the Mustangs as a grad transfer from California.
A native of San Bernardino, Hyder has two years of collegiate eligibility remaining and intends to pursue an MBA.
"Jarred brings much needed experience, maturity and leadership to the point guard position for us," Smith said. "He's a very cerebral player that competes with great pace and unselfishness – the epitome of what you want in a point guard.
"His high character and professional approach to the game is something that's innate. He was our main target once he hit the transfer portal and we're very fortunate to find someone that fits the academic and athletic profile at Cal Poly. Jarred's impact will be immediate for our Mustangs.
Hyder's upcoming season with Cal Poly will be his first on the court in two years after undergoing a season-ending in December while at California.
With the Golden Bears during his junior 2021-22 season, Hyder appeared in 22 of 32 games with starts at Washington (Jan. 12) and Washington State (Jan. 15) and finished with a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
As a sophomore during the 2020-21 season, Hyder – after transferring from Fresno State and becoming eligible in mid-December – made 21 appearances with four starts and averaged 5.4 points per game. He finished with four double-digit scoring outings, highlighted by a 13-point performance at Stanford (Feb. 7) and 12-point effort at NCAA Tournament qualifier Oregon State (Jan. 2).
With Fresno State as a freshman, Hyder started in 24 of 26 appearances while averaging 9.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per night. Playing 31.9 minutes per game, Hyder recorded nine double-digit scoring efforts, finishing with a career best 26 points against Winthrop (Nov. 10) in just his second collegiate outing. He added 23-point games at both San Diego (Nov. 12) and San Diego State (Jan. 1) while shooting 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
A 2019 graduate of Damien HS (La Verne, Calif.), Hyder averaged 21.7 points and 3.7 assists per game during his senior season.
