
Cal Poly Claims Third Straight Big West Women's Golf Championship

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- One stroke ahead of Long Beach State after a nail-biting second round, the Cal Poly women's golf team pulled away early in the final round to capture its third consecutive Big West Conference championship Tuesday at Spanish Trail Country Club.
Coach Courtney Roberts' Mustangs led by as many as 15 strokes on the final 18 holes of play and settled for an 11-stroke victory over The Beach on the 6,315-yard par-72 course.
Senior Vanessa Wang led the way with a final-round 73 en route to a fourth-place tie and junior Nicole Neale also finished in the three-way tie for fourth place with a final-round 77. Both compiled six-over-par 222 totals for 54 holes.
Sophomore Kamille Dimayuga shared seventh place with two other golfers at 224, posting a final-round 76. Junior Jensen Jalufka placed 16th and senior Elizabeth Scholtes 18th as all five Mustang golfers notched top-20 finishes. Jalufka carded a final-round 76 and Scholtes 78.
Cal Poly compiled a four-person 302 total on another windy day while Long Beach State posted a 312 total. The Mustangs finished with a 29-over-par 893 aggregate while The Beach checked in at 904. Third place went to UC Riverside at 909 and Cal State Fullerton was another stroke back at 910 for fourth place.
"We're so proud of the team for their fight and composure in some tough conditions," said Roberts. "This win was a total team effort and it's great to see their hard work pay off. It feels great to add another Big West Championship to the trophy case and keep building on the success of this program."
Jasmine Leovao of Long Beach State, who led by seven strokes entering the final round, shot a 78 Tuesday but still claimed the individual crown with an even-par 216 total, three shots ahead of UC Riverside's Tiffany Le (74-219). Hannah Ko (74-221) of Long Beach State was third.
Wang finished tied for first in par-four scoring at two over par and second in par-three scoring at one over par. Neale shared first place in par-five scoring with three other golfers at four under par.
Wang and Neale finished with eight birdies over 54 holes, tied for fourth place, while Jalufka's 35 pars was third in the field of 45 golfers.
"It feels great to add another Big West championship to the trophy case and keep building on the success of this program," said Roberts.
Wang and Neale both were named to the all-tournament team.
Cal Poly, winner of four of the last six Big West titles, will compete in one of six NCAA regionals May 8-10, likely at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., with Washington State serving as the host. Regional pairings will be announced Wednesday, April 26, at 10 a.m. PDT on The Golf Channel.
Arizona State will host the NCAA National Championships May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
