BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Jacob Ruley's single to left field on an 0-2 pitch drove home AJ Miller from second base with the winning run in the 10th inning as CSU Bakersfield edged Cal Poly 5-4 in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday night at Hardt Field.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs had rallied from a 4-0 deficit with two runs in both the fourth and eighth innings, both times on two-run singles by center fielder Jake Steels, but Cal Poly failed to capitalize on numerous other scoring opportunities, stranding 16 runners on the basepaths.
With the win, CSU Bakersfield evened the three-game Big West series at a game apiece and improved to 13-18 for the season and 4-10 in conference games.
Cal Poly which is 0-4 in extra-inning games this season, all 10-inning affairs, fell to 11-20 and 7-7.
Cal Poly outhit CSU Bakersfield 12-8, but left the bases loaded in the fourth and 10th innings and runners at second and third in both the third and sixth frames.
Tally Wright Jr. (1-2) pitched the final three innings for the win, allowing no runs and two hits with three strikeouts.
The loss went to Carlo Lopiccolo, who secured one out in the 10th but gave up two walks, one of them to Miller, who scored the winning run. Charlie Royle pitched two scoreless innings in relief while Kyle Scott recorded 2 1/3 scoreless frames.
Cal Poly's 12 hits included a double and two singles by Steels, Ryan Stafford and Ryan Fenn. Wyatt King added a double while Casillas had one single to stretch his hitting streak to 12 games. Fenn now has a six-game hitting streak.
Ruley, James Bell and Kobe Silva each had two hits for CSU Bakersfield.
The Roadrunners scored four times in the first inning on RBI hits from Bell and Ruley plus a two-run triple by Michael Pollard. Pollard was thrown out at the plate by Collin Villegas and Casillas trying to stretch his hit into an inside-the-park home run.
Steels, who entered the game with 14 RBIs, singled to left field to knock in two runs in the fourth and singled to center field for two more runs in the eighth.
The Mustangs had runners at first and third with one out in the 10th, but a grounder to first base and a strikeout ended the threat.
Kyle Scott and Lopiccolo each retired a batter in the bottom of the 10th before Miller and Konnor Palmeira drew walks, setting the stage for Ruley's game-winning single to left field.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with freshman southpaw Jakob Wright (0-0, 0.00 ERA) of Cal Poly to face CSU Bakersfield freshman right-hander Jacob Gutierrez (1-0, 1.64 ERA).
