BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Cody Hendriks, the No. 9 hitter in CSU Bakersfield's lineup with a .229 batting average, singled to center field with one out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, driving in the winning run as CSU Bakersfield defeated Cal Poly for the second straight day in walk-off fashion, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs jumped to a 2-0 lead on four hits in the first inning, but was held to one run and four hits the rest of the way by freshman right-hander Jacob Gutierrez (2-0), who earned the complete-game victory despite his rocky start.
The loss dropped Cal Poly to 11-21 overall and 7-8 in Big West games. CSU Bakersfield (14-18, 5-10 Big West) clinched the conference series, two games to one, overcoming a 12-4 loss in Friday's opener with a 5-4 walk-off win Saturday.
Jake Steels and Ryan Stafford opened the game with singles to center field and, after a flyout, Collin Villegas doubled to score Steels and Aaron Casillas stretched his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single.
After a visit from his head coach, Jeremy Beard, Gutierrez retired the next 12 Cal Poly batters and finished by scattering eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
CSU Bakersfield tied the game with two runs in the second frame and took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fifth. Cal Poly knotted the score at 3-3 in the sixth with an RBI single by Ryan Fenn.
In the CSUB ninth, AJ Miller and Jacob Ruley, the hero in Saturday's walk-off win, both singled. One out later, Brock Pereira was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting the stage for Hendriks' game-winning hit off Derek True.
The loss was charged to Ryan Baum (2-3), who allowed the go-ahead run to reach base in the ninth. In his second collegiate start, Jakob Wright allowed two runs and two hits in 1 2/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts, throwing 44 pitches.
Unlike Saturday's loss in which Cal Poly stranded 16 runners on the basepaths, the Mustangs left five runners on base Sunday.
Cal Poly's eight hits included two singles each by Stafford and Casillas plus the double by Villegas, his team-leading 12th of the year.
Cal Poly hosts San Jose State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Prior to the regularly scheduled contest, the two clubs will complete the suspended game from Feb. 20 at San Jose with the Mustangs leading 11-10 going to the ninth inning. The suspended game will be completed starting at 4 p.m.
