SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly seeks its third consecutive Big West Conference women's golf championship beginning Sunday at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.
The Mustangs, who claimed conference crowns in 2017, 2021 and 2022 under then-head coach Sofie Aagaard, are the No. 2 seed this year under first-year head coach Courtney Roberts. Top-seeded Long Beach State is ranked No. 80 by Golfstat.com while Cal Poly is 94th. The third seed is Cal State Fullerton at No. 124.
"We are really looking forward to competing at Spanish Trail Country Club in search of our third straight Big West Championship team title," said Roberts. "This team has a lot of firepower and everyone in the lineup knows how to go low."
Nine teams will compete for the title. Joining the Mustangs and The Beach are UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside, Hawai'i, UC Irvine, CSU Bakersfield and CSUN. UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara do not field women's golf teams.
UC Davis is the last team to claim three or more consecutive Big West titles in women's golf, accomplishing the feat from 2010-15.
First round will be played Sunday, with the second round Monday and the final round Tuesday. Sunday's round begins at 8:30 a.m. with Cal Poly, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton in the first group from the first tee at 8:30 a.m. All other rounds begin at 9 a.m.
"It will be important for us to continue to focus on our process, good decision making and have great belief in our ability to execute," Roberts said. "If we take care of these things during the championship, then I'm confident we will have a strong performance next week."
Located on the southwest side of Las Vegas off Tropicana Boulevard between interstates 15 and 215, Spanish Trail CC is a 27-hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Last year's event was held at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. Cal Poly overcame a five-point deficit at the start of the final round, finishing in a tie with Hawai'i as both teams carded four-person 54-hole 903 totals. The Rainbow Wahine recorded seven bogeys over the final four holes to fall back and the Mustangs won a one-hole playoff to determine the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division I Championship field.
This year's Mustang squad for the conference finals will consist of sophomore Kamille Dimayuga, juniors Nicole Neale and Jensen Jalufka and fifth-year seniors Elizabeth Scholtes and Vanessa Wang.
Both Dimayuga and Neale sport 73.9 scoring averages this season -- Neale playing 22 rounds and Dimayuga 19. Both also have earned seven rounds of par or better -- Dimayuga finishing in the top 20 four times and Neale three.
Jalufka is averaging 74.1 strokes per round while Scholtes and Wang both have averaged 74.9 strokes.
A year ago, Scholtes finished 14th and Jalufka 16th in the Big West finals. Dimayuga was 34th.
Top returnees from the 2022 event are Tiffany Le of UC Riverside and Hyeonji Kang of Hawai'i, who shared fourth place. Seventh-place finisher Hannah Ko of Long Beach State also returns.
Regional play will take place May 8-10 at six regional sites, with a total of 396 student-athletes competing. All six regional sites will have 12 teams and 6 individuals. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to play in the championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona taking place May 19-24.
The Big West automatic qualifiers will compete in one of six regional sites on May 9-11 -- Athens, Georgia (University of Georgia Golf Course), Westfield, Indiana (The Club at Chatham Hills), Pullman, Washington (Palouse Ridge Golf Club), Raleigh, North Carolina (Lonnie Poole Golf Course), San Antonio, Texas (TPC San Antonio) and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (PGA National Resort Champions Course).
The NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship will be hosted by Arizona State on May 19-24 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
