Quartet Shoot 73s as Cal Poly Grabs First-Round Big West Lead

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Four Cal Poly golfers shot 73s in the opening round of the Big West Women's Golf Championship on Sunday at Spanish Trail Country Club, giving the Mustangs a three-shot lead as they seek their third straight conference title.
Coach Courtney Roberts' Mustangs compiled a four-person four-over-par 292 total on the 6,315-yard par-72 course on the southwest side of Las Vegas. UC Riverside is second at 295 followed by Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State, both with 297 totals.
Vanessa Wang, Jensen Jalufka, Nicole Neale and Kamille Dimayuga all carded one-over-par 73s and are tied for fifth place with four other golfers entering Monday's second round. The final round will be played Tuesday.
"Proud of how our team competed out there today," said Roberts. "We did a nice job sticking to our gameplan and taking it one shot at a time."
Wang posted three birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey for her 73 while Dimayuga carded three birdies and four bogeys. Jalufka checked in with two birdies and three bogeys while Neale signed a card which had two birdies and three bogeys as well.
Elizabeth Scholtes, Cal Poly's other scorer, finished with a 77 and is tied for 22nd place. There are nine teams and 45 golfers in the field.
"We played a lot of steady golf overall and look to build on that tomorrow," said Roberts.
On top of the individual leaderboard is Jasmine Leovao of Long Beach State with a six-under-par 66, four shots ahead of UC Riverside's Tiffany Le. Third place is shared by Naomi Danner of UC Davis and Kaitlyn Smith of Cal State Fullerton, both matching par.
Wang and Dimayuga are tied for third in par-three scoring at one under par while Neale is seventh in par-five scoring at even par. The 13 pars by Neale and Jalufka are tied for fifth while Dimayuga and Wang are fourth with three birdies each.
