BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS CENTRAL | INTERACTIVE MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS BRACKET
HENDERSON, Nev. – Junior Brantly Stevenson finished with team high 18 points and fellow forward Ali Koroma scored 17, but the 10th-seeded Cal Poly men's basketball program – seeking a return to the Big West Championships semifinals for the first time in nine years – was eliminated in Thursday evening's quarterfinal round with the Mustangs falling to No. 2 UC Santa Barbara inside the Dollar Loan Center, 64-54.
Junior guard Camren Pierce added 10 points for Cal Poly (8-25), which led UC Santa Barbara (25-7) for a majority of the first half and into the second. However, the Gauchos – who shot 54.2 (13-for-24) percent from the floor in the second half – opened the period with a 14-7 run, assuming the game's final lead change with 12-and-a-half minutes to play.
Led by a season best seven boards from sophomore guard Julien Franklin, Cal Poly outrebounded UC Santa Barbara, 36-27. The Mustangs, however, sank just one of 12 three-point attempts.
Cal Poly reached Thursday's quarterfinal round for the second time in three seasons after eliminating seventh-seeded Long Beach State in Tuesday's opening round, 88-68.
UC Santa Barbara advanced to face either No. 3 UC Riverside or No. 6 UC Davis in Friday's 6 p.m. semifinal.
Trailing just once early and for only two minutes, Cal Poly – fueled by 10 Koroma points – stretched a first half lead as far as 22-12 seven minutes before the break. UC Santa Barbara, kept to a 34.8 (8-for-23) percent first half field goal mark, thrice cut its deficit to four points with Cal Poly ultimately taking a 32-26 lead into the locker room.
UC Santa Barbara, however, turned two Mustang turnovers inside the opening 60 seconds of the second half into a three-pointer from guard Ajay Mitchell and jumper from forward Andre Kelly to cut Cal Poly's lead to one.
After extending the lead to 37-33, Cal Poly was kept to just two field goals during an ensuing five-minute span with UC Santa Barbara's resulting 13-4 run handing the Gauchos a 46-41 advantage with 10 minutes to go.
Stevenson twice pulled Cal Poly back within three points of UC Santa Barbara's lead in next minute, first with two free throws and then with a jumper.
Mitchell, however, responded with a three-pointer to reaffirm a two-possession lead for UC Santa Barbara.
A Pierce layup with 95 seconds left trimmed Cal Poly's late disadvantage to 60-54. With the Mustangs forced to foul though, UC Santa Barbara converted all four free throw attempts down the stretch.
